Artworks by Helen Fryer

Artist Helen Fryer was born and raised in Cumbria, Helen studied Geography at the  University of Manchester and went on to live in various parts  of the UK. During this time Helen's passion for painting  became her primary focus, alongside exploring landscapes in a more physical sense; sailing (getting as far as St Kilda), cycling (including from Lands End to John O’Groats) and also bagging all the  Munros. She currently lives and works in High Ireby, Cumbria.

Helen's work is inspired by the many landscapes she has explored and, indeed, continues to explore, from grand vistas to the bijou beauty of a seemingly inconsequential hedge. She sees great value in the texture and minutiae of a place, balancing ethereal lighting with rugged terrain and
grounding her work with an earthy familiarity.

Helen admits to having very little patience as an artist so she works with incredible speed yet can spend hours immersed in a single piece, and her tactile approach to navigating her environment seems to be reflected in her process. Beginning with chalk pastels which she moves around with her hands before incorporating other media such as ink, she then works further details into the canvas with her fingernails, rulers and anything else close to hand.

Over the years she has gained a significant following and her work is exhibited in prestigious galleries throughout the UK.
